Tis the season to be jolly…. It’s also the season of goodwill so a perfect time to talk about volunteering with animals. There are lots of ways you can get involved with animal related charities, from fostering to fundraising to taking your own pet to visit people. Read on for what’s available on the Central Coast.
Delta Dogs
This is a fantastic organisation which also allows you to spend some special time with your own pet.Delta Dogs organise pets for therapy dogs to visit facilities such as aged care, schools and other organisations for a weekly or fortnightly visit to share their puppy licks and love.
Our nurse Sarah takes her dog Rupert to a local aged care home fortnightly and they both get so much from it. Sarah says “I love our regular visits and spending that extra tie with Rupert, I love seeing how much the residents get from our visits. It started off being all about Rupert but now it’s also about sitting and having a chat with certain residents and I’ve really started building a lovely relationship with them. I would recommend anyone with a friendly dog to join as it is so rewarding”.
Delta Dog volunteers and their amazing therapy dogs are the most valued resources, and Delta are always looking for new volunteer teams to join the Delta Therapy Dogs program.

Paws n Claws & Peggys Promise.. No Fur Kid Will Go Without The Basics
These are both local charities which are run by volunteers only, they don’t receive any financial assistance so have to run lots of fundraisers. They both offer assistance to people looking to rehome their pet for various reasons, help with unwanted pregnancies and work with the local animal shelters and pounds to get cats, dogs, kittens and puppies out of that environment and into foster homes ready for rehoming. They also assist in fostering, rehabilitating and rehoming puppy farm dogs. These dogs often need a lot of work and love as have often had little to no contact with people and don’t know how to just be a pet.
They are both always on the look out for new foster carers and/or fundraisers.
They are both fantastic local charities which do so much for the local animal community. Fostering is a great way to have a pet without the commitment too so if you have a four legged gap in your life which you haven’t filled have a think about fostering, it is very rewarding to see your furry foster going off happily to their new fur-ever home.

For wildlife lovers both Wildlife Arc & Wires offer training for you to become a wildlife carer. By law you can to complete one of their courses to be a registered carer before you can care for wildlife.

Care for Pets offers a variety of ways to volunteer and support the local community. They offer a fantastic program where you can look after someone’s pet while they are in hospital. This is fantastic for people who may not have family or friends close by that can look after their pet when they are sick or getting treatment. They are also always looking for sponsorship & support. Christmas is a great time to think about how you can support your local community and give something back. I’m sure there are plenty more local charities I could have mentioned so if no of the above appeal please do a search in your area to see what volunteer opportunities are available.
